Photo Trade: Lets exchange skills and live happily ever after.
If you look closely at the menu options on my website, you’ll see a new addition; Photo Trade, it says. What’s that you say? Well, that’s what this blog post is here to explain…
To put it simply, in addition to continuing my work as a regularly paid freelance photographer, I’m now also offering my services for free, in exchange for services, skills and/or products. In other words, I take some photos that equate to *insert monetary value here*, and in return receive services, skills or products that equal that monetary value (or thereabouts).
You get me?
Why am I doing this? A few reasons:
Firstly and most rewardingly its cultivating community, it’s sharing, it’s generating trust with our neighbors, and it’s helping each other out. We can’t live without each other after all.
We promote the local economy, cutting out invoices, the banks, and the taxman. Yay!
It’s a great way to introduce myself to a new town, “hello Vancouver!”
Folks who mightn’t be able to afford the photography they need, can get the photography they need.
It’s an awesome way for me to get a massage, some coffee credits, free clothes, singing lessons and so on.
Now, I know this isn’t anything particularly new. Us photographers have been taking photos for friends, in exchange for a bit of this and a bit of that, forever. In the past, I’ve shot photos in exchange for free food (in my favorite cafe!), cacao, yoga clothing, singing lessons, massages, and festival tickets. How much more exciting does life sound with those things in it!? (To see some of my past Trades, head to the Photo Trade page here)
So now I’ve made it an official offering, in a "it’s got a page on my website” kinda way. I’m encouraging new people to step forward so I can help turn their ideas into reality. I’m here to encourage local, sustainable, environmentally-friendly and animal-friendly businesses to spread their positive messaging. I’m excited to see what offers come through the inbox…
