A Real Life Treasure Hunt: Mushroom Foraging

Birthday’s were always the best days. Each year, on the 19th of April, I’d awake to find arrows, clues and riddles leading me on a treasure hunt around my home. Sometimes taking me out to the garden, around the local park, or into the nearby cave, the spirit of the somehow-related Indiana Jones was with me as I adventured for my birthday presents, my hidden treasure. Thanks for being awesome, Mum & Dad!

This spirit of adventure comes in different forms these days; I go a little further afield than the nearby park, and treasure comes in a little different form; waterfalls, birds, beings, and today: Mushrooms!

I recently ventured north of my new home (Vancouver BC) searching for hidden gems pushing themselves up from the forest floor. My childhood spirit was alive with adventure!

Alongside Ben, who knows a lot more about mushies than I do, I scoured for chanterelles and porcinis, and got completely drenched in the process. My camera just about survived after a few days sitting in rice, and below are some photos to show for it.

The chanterelles tasted amazing sauteed with coconut milk, onion, and garlic, and I dehydrated and powdered the porcinis (pictured) to create a long-lasting strong and rich mushroom flavouring. What made this a true Canadian experience, however, was the trip to Tim Hortons!

Here’s some pics…
